Box Score The Penn State Abington baseball team defeated McDaniel College, 10-6 in the first round of the ECAC South Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
Abington opened the game with a RBI single by
Bill Parave who knocked the ball out to center field, rounding
Matt Lawson and
Pat Moran safely home for the 2-0 lead in the first.
Mike Kerns saw a scoring opportunity off a wild pitch and stole home, tallying the third run.
McDaniel answered back in the bottom of first, posting two runs on the board before taking the lead as Mike Freeman notched a 2 RBI double out to left field to make it a 4-3 ball game.
Moran kept Abington in the game as he popped the ball out in front of centerfield for a 2 RBI single as AJ Vagliani and
Will Erskine came across home plate, retaking the 5-4 lead for. Kerns added an insurance run after popping out to the same spot of center field, allowing Moran to score easily to make it a 6-3 ball game.
The Green Terrors attempted to rally in the bottom of fifth inning, but could only muster a run as they watched the Nittany Lions use a four-run rally in the seventh to extend the lead 10-5.
McDaniel strived its last chance for a comeback in the eighth inning, but the combination of both Abington's pitching and strong defensive tactics, limited the Green Terrors to scoring a run on two hits with two runners left on base.
Abington wrapped up the remainder of the game as relief pitcher
Brian Camp coaxed three consecutive outs to end the game.
Anthony DiVincenzo started on the mound for the Nittany Lions and struck out three batters, giving up five runs on nine hits in the four innings that he pitched. Camp collected his fifth win of the season after filling in relief, giving up just one run on four hits.
Moran went 3-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs, while Kerns and Parave also notched 3 RBIs each.
Abington will face Penn State Behrend (27-15-1) on Saturday in the ECAC South semifinal round at Wesley College. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
