Owls Dominate, Drop Lady Lions 1-0

Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. - Penn State Abington hit the road for an early Friday afternoon matchup, a rare occurrence in NCAA play, and the Lady Lions (3-3) would probably like to keep it that way. Whether it was the odd start time or simply a talented opponent, the women struggled against Bryn Mawr College (2-2-1), falling by a score of 1-0.

Although the final scoreline seems to point to a close fought game, the rest of the stat sheet reveals a deeper difference between the teams. The Lady Lions were outshot by a tally of 15-2, and the women didn't get those two shot off until the second half. Bryn Mawr also totaled five corner kicks on the game, compared to a lone corner opportunity for Penn State Abington.

The Owls opened the game by sending two shots at goal, but not getting them on frame. Finally, in the 12th minute, Bryn Mawr got their first shot on goal, and it would be the only one they needed on the day. Freshman forward Veronica Roux got an unassisted chance on goal, and managed to slip her shot past sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Benedict. The score put the Owls on top 1-0, a lead which they would hold for the entirety of the game.

Penn State Abington did their best to fight off the attack and create a semblance of an offense. After two more shots from the Owls, the Lady Lions were able to earn their lone corner of the game in the 34th minute, but that chance was quickly closed out by Bryn Mawr. The second half opened with another positive opportunity for Penn State Abington, with freshman midfielder Desirae Holmes getting a shot on goal for the women. However, senior goalkeeper Rebecca Joseph was up to the task in net for the Owls, recording one of her two saves of the afternoon on the chance.

After the early opportunity for the Lady Lions, the game turned once again into a repeat of the first half. The Owls controlled possession of the ball and recorded eight more shots in the second half. Holmes closed the game out for the Lady Lions by getting off her second shot on goal, but once again the shot was saved by Joseph to keep the clean sheet for the Bryn Mawr squad.

One positive on the night for Penn State Abington was the strength of the defense. Although the Owls were able to light off fifteen shots on the afternoon, the Abington defense and goalkeeper Gabrielle Benedict were strong, with Benedict ending up with nine saves on the ten shots she faced.

The Lady Lions get an immediate opportunity to put today's tough loss behind them, as they end their five game road trip tomorrow with a 1 p.m. NEAC Conference matchup against College of St. Elizabeth in Florham Park, N.J. Penn State Abington finally gets to return home on Tuesday evening for another conference match, this one against Lancaster Bible College.
