Abington Upset #10 Rowan 4-3

Box Score JENKINTOWN, Pa. – With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth inning, junior catcher Tom Ditro hit a single to right field that knocked in the winning run as second baseman, Callan Palmer crossed the plate as the Penn State Abington baseball team upset #10 Rowan University, 4-3, Monday afternoon.

Four different Nittany Lions had at least a hit as Abington (6-6) took the lead late in the fourth inning and pieced together a strong effort on the mound from three different pitchers for the win.

Jeff Davis started on the mound for the Blue and White as he allowed three runs on 10 hits and struck out two Rowan (10-3) batters in the 6.2 innings pitched. In the first three innings, Davis started strong, allowing just two hits and forcing the Profs to leave three runners on bases before Rowan managed to get on bases in the third inning on an error and a single to center field. Casey Grimes then found the sweet spot on the bat, placing the ball out into the gap towards left field to score Rowan's first run, unearned, from second. Davis remained in control and forced a pair of ground outs to prevent any further damage.

After a 1-2-3 play from Rowan's defense in the bottom of third, the Profs went to work in the fourth inning, placing a runner on second and third on an error and a single to left field before McCabe Reim successfully completed a sacrificed bunt to drive the runner home from third, unearned, for the Profs' 2-0 lead. Davis held the runners at bay as he forced a pop up to third followed by a ground out towards first base to close out the inning.

The bats came to life on the turn of the fourth inning, as Abington scored three runs on two hits, thanks to a pair of errors by Rowan to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game. Ditro lead the top of the order with a single towards third base before senior outfielder, A.J. Vagliani double out towards right field to put runners into scoring position at second and third before freshman firstbaseman Mike Scaringelli drew a ball four to load up the bases with no outs. Freshman third baseman Diego Melendez then grounded out towards second, bringing Ditro safely home for the first Abington score as Scaringelli and Vagliani moved up a base. Junior Fran Caruso then worked the count against Rowan's pitcher, Andrew Lysy, and was able to pick up the RBI as Vagliani scored on the play to tie up the game and advancing Scaringelli  to third, before being thrown out at first.

Lysy was already feeling the pressure on the mound and threw a wild pitch on the next batter, allowing Scaringelli to score to give the Nittany Lions the 3-2 lead before Rowan closed out the inning with a fly out to centerfield.

Rowan managed to jump back into action in the top of seventh as the Profs scored on an Abington error to knot up the score 3-3 on three hits and an error. With two outs and runners on the corners, the Nittany Lions made a pitching change, putting Michael Dunlap on the mound to relieve Davis midway through the inning and Dunlap closed out the inning with a fly out towards left field to keep the game close.

The Blue and White's pitching staff kept the Profs in check with Dunlap posting two outs on the board before senior closer, Kevin Faber stepped in to shut out the next inning, allowing just one hit and leaving two Rowan runners on bases.

After a pair of outs in the bottom of the ninth, the game was deemed to head into extra innings until Abington began to reach on bases with a walk and a single to put the runners on first and second. Rowan was forced to make a pitching change with Ditro stepping up to the plate, but Ditro worked the count and finally made contact with the ball and placed it towards the gap at right field to plate Palmer from second for the game winning hit.

Vagliani went 2-for-3 at the plate as Ditro went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run in the win. Melendez, who was recently named NEAC Player of the Week, and Caruso each collected an RBI in the win. Faber collected his third win of the season.

The Nittany Lions extended the winning streak to four and the victory is Abington's first over a ranked opponent in program history.

Abington will look to extend its winning streak as the Nittany Lions returns to action tomorrow on the road against Immaculata University, weather permitting. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
