Box Score The Penn State Abington men's basketball improved to 4-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference and 7-9 overall with a 71-68 win over visiting Penn State Berks (2-4, 2-10) on Wednesday night.
Abington struggled to find the basket in the opening minutes of the game until
Will Alton sparked the momentum as he stole the ball from Michael Porter for the layup on a breakaway. Abington extended the lead to 11 points as
Mike Marvin posted the layup with 5:31 remaining in the first half.
Berks began to find steam and started to inch back during the next three minutes but could not produce the points as Abington recovered six defensive rebounds in the final minutes to jump ahead 40-29 at the half.
Marvin set the tone for Abington in the opening of the second half with a three-pointer to extend the lead to 12. However, Berks showed intensity later into the second stanza, converting on a 14-2 run to extend the lead by two off of Tom Smith's layup at the 11:50 mark.
Despite trailing behind Berks,
Mike Colacci nailed three three-pointers, bringing Abington to the edge of Berks' toes.
After several minutes of a back-and-forth game of lead changes, Abington finally put the game away after Alton posted the layup with 29 seconds remaining on the clock to make it 71-68. With a strong defense, Abington fended off the offensive attack by Berks and held on to their third straight win.
Five players posted double figures as Marvin finished the game with his tenth double of the season after scoring 15 points and collecting 19 rebounds. Alton also netted 15 points and added four steals, while teammate
Don DeLeo posted 11 points. Colacci hit five total three-pointers and finished the night with 21 points.
The Nittany Lions will now hit the road, as they go on a two-game road trip, starting with a 1 p.m. matchup at Wells College on Sunday.
