Penn State Abington Falls in Hard-Fought Contest

Marvin's third straight double-double can't push Nittany Lions past Rosemont

Box Score Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball squad dropped a hard-fought contest earlier this evening against Rosemont College by a score of 92-84. Sophomore forward Mike Marvin recorded his third straight double-double of the season to lead the Nittany Lions, but it wasn't enough, as the Ravens were able to come away with the key baskets late to pull away to the victory.

Penn State Abington (0-3, 0-0 NEAC) took control of the game early, leading by as many as eight points in the first five minutes. The Ravens were able to keep in close enough range to the Nittany Lions' lead, however. An and-1 fastbreak layup off of a steal, all accomplished by Rosemont senior Derrick Carter, brought the Ravens back within one. With Carter draining the subsequent free throw, the teams were knotted back up at 12-12.

From this point onward in the first half, Rosemont (2-0, 0-0 CSAC) was able to take hold of the lead, and actually were able to extend it to as many as 12 points. However, Penn State Abington was able to close the half with several key baskets and stops to cut the Ravens' lead to single digits, and the teams hit the lockers with the score sitting at 48-40 in favor of the visitors.

As the second half broke, each team fought to push the scoreline back in their direction. Try as they might, the Ravens were never quite able to put the game out of reach, and it would come back to bite them as time dwindled down. Some timely buckets from the Nittany Lions, paired with a strong offensive attack that got Rosemont in foul trouble early on in the half kept Abington right in the mix. The blue and white cut the lead to seven, then to four. By the ten-minute mark, a jumper from senior Don DeLeo drew Abington to within one point at 64-63.

The Ravens were able to pull away slightly again, with a jumper from junior Dan Kearny pushing the lead back to six. Then it was Abington's turn to respond, going on a 5-0 run on a free throw from junior Mike Colacci and a pair of layups from Marvin to cut the lead back down to a single point.

Once again, Rosemont tightened up their game and would pull away from the Nittany Lions. Finally, for a third time, Abington was able to close within a point of the Ravens, this time on a pair of free throws from sophomore Max Alton, and this time, finally, the Nittany Lions would not be denied. After getting huge defensive stops on three straight possessions, the Nittany Lions would finally jump back on top with 5:56 to play, as it was Mike Marvin once again draining a jumper to push the home team back in front 72-71.

This lead would not last long, unfortunately for Abington, as Rosemont jumped back ahead by four points. Cue Don DeLeo once more for the Nittany Lions, as the energetic senior came up big with an and-1 lay-in to cut the lead back down to one with 3:23 to play. However, this would be the closest Abington would get for the rest of the night. The Ravens, assisted by two huge three-pointers, were able to shut down the Nittany Lions attack for the rest of the evening and prevent any further comebacks from the men in blue-and-white.

Abington was led, once again, by sophomore Mike Marvin, who put up 27 points and pulled down 17 total rebounds for his third double-double in the three games played this season. Junior Mike Colacci added 19 points of his own, while DeLeo and Alton added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Rosemont was led by their own powerful senior, Derrick Carter, who poured in 24 points, while senior DeAndre Jordan and junior Mitch Carsillo each added 18 points of their own.

The Nittany Lions will take a little time off to enjoy their Thanksgiving break before hitting the hardwood once again next Wednesday evening, November 28th as they will face-off against Cairn University. Gametime is set for 8 p.m. Keep checking in at abingtonsports.com for all your news and notes on the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions basketball team.
