Box Score Cazenovia, N.Y. - Penn State Abington got a crucial NEAC victory earlier this afternoon on the road at Cazenovia College.
Mike Marvin added yet another double-double to his total so far this season, scoring 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in the 76-61 victory.
The Nittany Lions (4-10, 2-1 NEAC) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in what would be a barometer for the rest of the afternoon. Sophomore
Avery Barnes sank a quick jumper right off the opening tip for Penn State Abington. After a Cazenovia turnover and foul,
Mike Marvin made one of two free throws. Then, several more Wildcats possessions came up empty, including yet another turnover and a missed three-pointer, before Marvin drained a jump shot of his own. In total on the afternoon. On the day, Penn State Abington forced Cazenovia into 15 turnovers and held the Wildcats to a dreadful 4-19 performance from behind the arc.
As the period wore on, the Nittany Lions only increased their lead. With just under ten minutes remaining in the half, free throws from
RJ Handy and
Mike Marvin and a layup from
Max Alton pushed the Penn State Abington lead to 20-10. The Nittany Lions stretched that to a 12 point lead on another
Avery Barnes jumper with four minutes left in the frame. A
Mike Marvin jumper pushed the lead to 13 with 1:40 left in the half, before a mini-run from Cazenovia made the halftime score 37-28 in favor of the Blue and White.
Cazenovia (4-8, 1-3 NEAC) simply couldn't do anything in the second half, either, to stem the Penn State Abington attack. The Nittany Lions opened the second frame in a similar fashion to the first. Marvin made another jumper, before a massive dunk and two free throws from Barnes pushed the score to 43-28. Cazenovia was able to cut that margin down to eight off of a Daniel Cunningham layup at the 14:44 mark. Abington simply went on an 14-6 run of their own to jump right back ahead by 62-46.
By this point, the Wildcats had lost too much contact with the Nittany Lions in terms of the scoreboard. The game closed with the Cazenovia unable to make up any ground, and Abington came away with the much-needed NEAC road win by a score of 76-61. Marvin led all scorers with 23 points, and led everybody in rebounds as well with 14 total. Also leading the way for Penn State Abington was Barnes, who finished with 19 on the afternoon, and
Mike Colacci, who scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting for the day. The Wildcats were led by Cunningham and Matt Perry, who scored 11 and 10 points respectively for Cazenovia.
The victory helps Abington move into much better position in the NEAC conference. With a loss, the Nittany Lions would've been mired in the bottom of the conference standings, but the win helps the Blue and White move into the top half of the contenders in the conference. The team has a chance to further improve their standing when they head back out onto the court tomorrow for a 2:00 game against SUNYIT.
