Box Score Abington, Pa. - With the Nittany Lions down two points late in the game after leading almost the entrie afternoon, Penn State Abington was looking for a miracle basket. Up stepped junior guard
Mike Colacci, who nailed a clutch three-point basket with just over seven seconds remaining in the game to give the Blue and White a 72-71 lead that they held onto the rest of the way.
Penn State Abington (5-12, 3-3 NEAC) led for almost the entire game until it came down to crunch time. Just five minutes into the first half, the Nittany Lions had opened up a seven point lead. Ten minutes later and the blue and White had stretched that lead to ten points. In the final minute of the half, sophomore
Mike Marvin was able to sink a fifteen-footer. Then, after rebounding an Express miss with just five seconds left, Marvin took the ball coast-to-coast, letting go with a finger-roll layup as the horn sounded, making the halftime score 43-28 in favor of the Nittany Lions.
As the second half started, it became immediately evident that Wells (7-10, 4-3) was not about to go away quietly. Just five minutes in, the Express had already cut their deficit back down to single digits. A stretch of play that included back-to-back three pointers from Colacci kept the Nittany Lions ahead comfortably for the moment. Then, with just over eight minutes remaining in the game, Wells again went on a mini-run, cutting the Nittany Lions lead to just four points. Penn State Abington was able to do just enough to keep their lead until 1:50 remained in the game. There, the Express tied the game at 67-67 off a pair of free throws from Jordan Bishop.
The next Nittany Lions possession came up empty, as
Mike Marvin missed a jumper and Wells came up with the rebound. Penn State Abington held the Express to a missed jumper of their own, but junior Jonathan Bonds came up with a huge offensive rebound and putback to send Wells into a 69-67 lead.
Max Alton tied the game back up briefly for Penn State Abington before Jordan Bishop hit two more free throws to give Wells the lead once again. With time winding down and the Nittany Lions staring into the face of another heartbreaking NEAC loss, up stepped
Mike Colacci once again. The junior three-point specialist broke free from his defender, and Alton found him open on the right side of the arc. Colacci took the pass and stepped into a three-pointer, and got nothing but the bottom of the net.
All that remained was for Penn State Abington to hang on to their slim lead, and hang on they did. Wells got off a last-second desperation shot, but it was nowhere close to going in, and the Nittany Lions erupted off the court with the 72-71 victory. Sophomore
Mike Marvin pulled in yet another double-double, with 18 points and 21 total rebounds, breaking the single game record for the most rebounds in a game.
Max Alton came up huge as well for Penn State Abington, pouring in 28 points in the much-needed victory. Penn State Abington has a chance to build a winning streak when they face off against Lancaster Bible College this Wednesday night at 8:00 pm. Check back in at
