Crucial Victory Vaults Women's Soccer Into Second Place in NEAC

3-0 win over Lancaster Bible puts Nittany Lions in great position in conference standings

Box Score Lancaster, Pa. – In a crucial North Eastern Athletic Conference matchup early Thursday afternoon, the Penn State Abington women's soccer squad took home a 3-0 victory over Lancaster Bible College. With both teams vying for second position in the NEAC standings, the Nittany Lions used an early goal from Desirae Holmes to take the lead before firing in two insurance goals in the second half. Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Alyssa Kaye posted her seventh shutout of the year, shutting down a Chargers offense that is third in the conference in goalscoring.

Penn State Abington (10-2, 7-1 NEAC) got on the board early with a goal from sophomore midfielder Desirae Holmes just 3:19 into the match. Freshman Molly Wyman was in possession of the ball in the box and sent it towards the goal. Holmes managed to collect it, and the talented scorer managed to slot the ball on the short side of Chargers keeper Kaitlyn Scheuing and into the net for the early 1-0 lead. After the quick goal, both sides settled into a back-and-forth style game, with each team getting plenty of shots off in the half. Neither side was able to capitalize on their attacks, but the ferocity of the game only intensified into the second half. Lancaster Bible (9-4, 6-2 NEAC) continued to press for the tying goal, firing off six more shots in the second half. However, Alyssa Kaye came up big in goal for the Nittany Lions, stopping all five shots on goal that she faced to preserve her clean sheet. Meanwhile, the Blue and White were able to break through on the counter-attack for their second and third goals, putting the match entirely out of reach. First, sophomore defender Ashley Quenzer found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Quenzer jumped on a loose ball in the box and fired a shot into the lower right hand corner of the net to make the score 2-0. Then, in the 75th minute, the Nittany Lions got their final goal of the day off the foot of freshman Kayla Nolan. After receiving a pass from Wyman, Nolan found her way to the top of the penalty box, where she chipped a shot over top of Scheuing's head and into the net to give Penn State Abington their 3-0 victory.

With the win, the Nittany Lions jump Lancaster Bible in the standings and move up to second place in the NEAC with three conference games left to play. The women's squad now has a long break before they take the pitch, with their next match not coming until next Saturday, October 19th. The Blue and White will be home that weekend, taking on Wells College on Saturday and Keuka College on Sunday. Be sure to keep an eye on abingtonsports.com for all your Nittany Lions athletics news!
