Paparo and Martins Power Nittany Lions Over Fighting Tigers

Penn State Abington opens weekend in New York with a 6-0 NEAC Victory

Box Score Cobleskill, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer squad picked up their third straight win earlier this afternoon against North Eastern Athletic Conference foe SUNY Cobleskill. Marco Paparo and Alex Martins each scored twice to help the Nittany Lions pull off the 6-0 shutout.

Penn State Abington (6-2, 2-0 NEAC) showed no signs of rust from their week-long break from competition, coming out and scoring their first goal of the game just over fifteen minutes in. It was Paparo who opened the scoring account for the Nittany Lions, taking possession of a deflected ball inside the Cobleskill penalty box and firing a shot into the net to give the Blue and White a 1-0 lead. Just six minutes later, Paparo netted his second, this time using his height to outjump the Fighting Tigers defense and head a Wellay Asifuah cross into the netting for a quick 2-0 lead. For the rest of the half, SUNY Cobleskill (0-7, 0-4 NEAC) was able to cling to their two-goal deficit, beating back numerous Penn State Abington attacks and even getting off a few shots of their own. However, the Blue and White were able to preserve their clean sheet throughout the match, thanks to the hard work of the defense and senior goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol, who recorded his first shutout of the season.

The Nittany Lions defense was even able to get into the scoring act. Junior defender Gustavo Alegria, in his first game back from an early season injury, gave Penn State Abington a 3-0 lead with his second goal of the season, a well-worked one-on-one opportunity with the Cobleskill goalkeeper. Later on in the half, Alex Martins netted a double of his own to pad the visitors' lead. His first goal came in the 64th minute on a blast into the net from just inside the penalty box. Then, 55 seconds later, he beat the Cobleskill keeper on a one-on-one situation of his own to make it a 5-0 game. Finally, with just twelve minutes left to play, junior Jose Giron tallied the final insurance goal, this time after the ball took another deflection in front of the goal mouth.

With the win, the Nittany Lions keep their NEAC record clean at 2-0, and they will hit the pitch once again tomorrow afternoon for the second of back-to-back days, this time against NEAC opponent SUNYIT. The Wildcats scored six goals themselves earlier today in their game against Penn State Berks. Tomorrow's game will take place at 12:00 pm in Utica, N.Y.
