Penn State Abington Completes Weekend Sweep With Win Over SUNYIT

Second straight 3-1 victory moves Nittany Lions further towards top of NEAC standings

Box Score Utica, N.Y. - The Penn State Abington women's soccer squad took home their second 3-1 victory in as many games earlier Sunday afternoon with a win over SUNYIT. Three different Nittany Lions tallied goals on the afternoon while senior Alyssa Kaye made two saves in her seventh win of the season.

Penn State Abington (7-2, 4-1 NEAC) got the offense going early on in the game, as Desirae Holmes got the team on the board just 13:49 into the match. The sophomore scored her first goal of the season on an unassisted effort, and it appeared as if the Nittany Lions would take over the game early. However, SUNYIT (1-8, 1-4 NEAC) kept the Blue and White off the scoreboard for the rest of the half, and in fact answered back with a goal of their own by Stephanie Wurz just minutes before the halftime whistle.

With the score knotted at 1-1, Penn State Abington came out firing in the second half. Fifteen minutes into the period, their offensive attack was rewarded when Mallory Mugnier scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. It also ended up being her third game winning goal of the year, as the Blue and White held onto that lead for the rest of the match, and in fact extended in with an insurance goal from Kayla Nolan to ultimately give Penn State Abington their 3-1 victory. With the win, the Nittany Lions move to 7-2 on the year and continue their climb back up the North Eastern Conference Standings. The team now sits in a tie for third place in the leaderboard, and will have their next chance to extend their winning streak when they face off against Morrisville State next Saturday afternoon.
