Women's Basketball Earns Second Straight NEAC Victory

Nittany Lions cruise to 61-36 victory over Wilson; Keyes leads all scorers with 23 points

Box Score Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball squad pulled off their second straight NEAC conference win earlier Wednesday evening with a 61-36 victory over Wilson College. Junior Stephanie Keyes led the way with 23 points, including five baskets from beyond the arc, while junior forward Jessica Schmidt put up 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Nittany Lions. The Phoenix were led by Vanessa Whitfield, who scored 20 points and grabbed nine boards of her own.

Penn State Abington (4-9, 2-5 NEAC) opened the game on an 8-0 run that proved to be indicative of how the rest of the evening would go. Schmidt scored the first two baskets of the night for the Nittany Lions off strong work in the paint, and then senior Alyssa Kaye converted two more layups down low to put the hosts ahead 8-0 in the first two minutes. Wilson (0-9, 0-6 NEAC) used a jumper from Katelyn Wingerd to get on the board themselves, and with 12:33 left in the half, it was still a close game at 15-6. However, over the next six minutes, the Blue and White would go on a 20-0 run to take control of the affair. Janay Winston and Teharah Worrell got their first buckets of the game to open the run before Keyes drained back-to-back three pointers to make it a 25-6 game. A minute later, Schmidt sank a pair of layups, which Keyes followed up with a fastbreak layup of her own. A pair of free throws from Breanna Lineman and another jumper from Winston and Abington had wrested control of the game with a 29 point lead.

Over the remainder of the contest, the Phoenix would close to within 20 points at times, but the Nittany Lions pulled away late with another pair of back-to-back threes from Keyes. When the final horn sounded, the Blue and White had cruised to a 61-36 victory over their North Eastern Athletic Conference foes. It is the second straight conference win for Penn State Abington, who defeated Morrisville State last weekend to earn their first NEAC victory of the year. With the win, the Nittany Lions vault over Penn State Berks and into fourth place in the NEAC South Division. The squad will look to continue their winning streak when they hit the road on Saturday for a conference tilt against SUNY Cobleskill. The Fighting Tigers have two conference wins themselves and currently hold the fifth spot in the NEAC North. Game time is set for 3:00 pm in Cobleskill, N.Y..
