Reading, Pa. - For the second straight season, the Penn State Abington women's soccer team earned a berth in the NEAC championship game. Unfortunately, for the second straight season they ran into the juggernaut known as Penn State Berks.
Lizzie Mummau and Penn State Berks were too much for Abington as they fell Sunday afternoon by a 3-1 margin.
One positive to take away from the game was the play of goalkeeper
Margaret Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.). She was a rock in goal for Abington. Sheridan made five saves in the first half, and faced eight Berks shots to preserve the first half shutout. Both teams would enter half tied at zero.
Berks would get on the scoreboard just three minutes into the second half in the 48
th minute. Ellie McKinstry sent a cross over to Lizzie Mummau, who deflected the ball past Sheridan into the far corner for the 1-0 lead. Mummau led the NEAC in points and assists this season with 53 and 13 respectively. She was also second in the conference in goals with 20.
Mummau would score her second goal of the game in the 67
th minute to give Berks a 2-0 lead. Taylor Schwartz collected an assist on the play. The same duo would strike again in the 78
th minute, as Mummau would score the hat trick to give Berks the commanding 3-0 lead.
Mallory Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.) would add a penalty kick goal in the 89
th minute to cut Berks' lead to 3-1.
Berks outshot Abington 24-7 for the contest with 15 of those shots on goal. Abington only registered two shots on net. Sheridan made 12 saves for Abington.
With the loss, Penn State Abington's hopes of an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament come to an end. The team will now wait for the NCAA Selection Show tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to find out if they receive an at-large bid into the tournament.
