Nolan and Penn State Abington Impressive in Season Opener

Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa- The Penn State Abington women's soccer team kicked off their 2014 campaign in style Friday evening with a 4-0 rout over Immaculata University.

The Nittany Lions dominated the Mighty Macs in all aspects of the game, outshooting Immaculata 25-8 for the contest including 13 shots on net. Abington drew 10 corner kicks compared to Immaculata's two.

Sophomore Victoria Parker (Philadelphia, Pa.) would strike first for Abington in the 20th minute on a penalty kick for her first goal of the season. The Lions continued to dominate in the first half, outshooting Immaculata 14-5 in the first 45 minutes of play. They would take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room.

The Nittany Lions smothering defense and quick offense were too much for Immaculata to handle in the second half. The Lions would increase their lead in the 64th minute courtesy of sophomore midfielder Kayla Nolan (Abington, Pa.). Nolan pulled away from her defender and went far post over goalkeeper Meghan McCurnin for the 2-0 lead. Coming off of a strong freshman season, Nolan will be called upon this season to provide offense for the Lions.

A little under 20 minutes later in the 83rd minute, junior midfielder Desirae Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa.) would put the game away for good with her first goal of season. Holmes shot the ball from the right wing and the ball went in around the far post past McCurnin for the 3-0 Abington lead. With the strike, Holmes now has 11 career goals at Abington.

Nolan would tally an insurance goal late in the 88th minute to seal the victory for Abington and give head coach Brian Blesi a win in his Abington debut behind the bench. Nolan finished the game with two goals and a game high five shots on net. ?

Abington goalkeeper freshman Margaret Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) faced four shots total for the game, while Immaculata's Meghan McCurnin stopped nine of the 13 shots on target that came her way.

With the win, the Nittany Lions move their record to 1-0 on the season and look to keep that record perfect when they get back on the pitch tomorrow afternoon. Penn State Abington will travel to Collegeville, Pa. and play the Ursinus Bears Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. You can find live stats and video of the game on www.abingtonsports.com
