Box Score READING, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's soccer team endured their first NEAC loss of the season Wednesday evening falling to Penn State Berks 8-2.
Abington trailed early in the contest as PSU Berks took an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Berks' Chrissy Smith sent a cross in front of Abington keeper
Margaret Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) which was directed into the net by Lizzie Mummau.
Berks would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 28
th minute as Taylor Schwartz sent a through ball to Dana Sarcinello, who kicked the ball into the far corner past Sheridan.
Abington would show fight though late in the second half as they knotted the score up at 2-2. Their first goal came when
Victoria Parker (Philadelphia, Pa.) was rewarded a penalty kick in 34
th minute. Her initial shot was stopped by Berks' goalkeeper Savannah Cramer, but Parker knocked in the rebound to cut Berks' lead to 2-1.
A little over a minute later in the 36
th minute, Abington's
Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) found herself one-on-one with the keeper in which she fired the ball into the far back corner to tie the match at 2-2. Both teams would head into the locker rooms tied at two. Abington was outshot 18-9 in the first half.
Margaret Sheridan made seven saves through the first 45 minutes.
Berks would regain the lead in the 52
nd minute on header from Brennan Moyer that beat Sheridan. Abington was unable to regain the momentum, and Berks ended up scoring five more goals in a twenty minute span to seal the victory.
Berks outshot Abington 35-12 for the contest with 22 of those shots on target.
With the loss, Abington fall to 3-2 on the season (2-1 NEAC) and will look to improve that record this Saturday at Hatboro-Horsham High School in Horsham, Pa. against the SUNYIT Wildcats.
