Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Held Scoreless For Third Time in 2014, Battles to Draw With SUNYIT

HORSHAM, Pa. – Men's soccer and SUNYIT battled to a scoreless draw in wet conditions Saturday afternoon. The tie brings the Nittany Lions' record to 0-0-2 in conference play and 0-3-3 on the year.

Both teams had equal opportunity throughout regulation and both overtime periods, as Abington took 11 shots to the Wildcats' 10.

Though the Blue and White were able to create numerous scoring opportunities; its best chances came in the last 12 minutes of regulation.

In the 78th minute senior forward Alex Martins (Philadelphia, Pa.) played a ball into the box off the right corner kick as junior Joel Klapper (Doylestown, Pa.) attempted to connect with the ball, only to come up short as SUNYIT keeper, Jesse Yanarella managed to grab onto the ball midair before any damage was done.

Abington was able to generate another scoring chance in the closing seconds of the first overtime when Viet Pham (Philadelphia, Pa) was able to sneak in behind the SUNYIT defense to get his head on a long ball from freshman Robert Ziegler (Norristown, Pa.) from the right wing. However, Pham headed the ball into the awaiting arms of Yanarella, who made his fourth save of the game to hold the score at 0-0.

Abington looked determined to not only end the game early but pick up its first win of the season with Martins taking an opportunity on a shot from 10-yards out, only to watch the ball sail past Yanarella and hit the left post in opening seconds of the second overtime.  The Nittany Lions would take two additional chances on goal late into the contest, but it would either end up high or in the Yanarella's hands once again.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol (Perkasie, Pa.) started in goal for the Nittany Lions and recorded two saves; both in the second half.  Martins and Ziegler both led the squad with three shots.

Abington will return to action tomorrow looking for its first win of the season as the Nittany Lions host SUNY Cobleskill for the 2:00 p.m. contest.
