Women's Soccer Takes 2-1 Win over SUNYIT

HORSHAM, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team picked up their third conference win of the season after edging SUNYIT, 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Abington improves to 3-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) and 4-2 overall, while the Wildcats picked up their first conference loss of the season and go 2-3 on the year.

The Nittany Lions wasted no time early into the game as freshman Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) made a 20-yard pass through the middle, connecting with Megan Murphy (Warminster, Pa.) for the breakaway as Murphy dribbled the ball up the field and slightly tipped the ball past the goalkeeper's fingers to put Abington up 1-0 at the 13th minute of the contest.

Abington continued its offensive attack, making nine shots to SUNYIT's three in the first half and one of those shots finally found the back of the net to put the Blue and White up 2-0. In the 41st minute, Jones quickly took control of the ball and found Michelle Latronica (Philadelphia, Pa.) open near the top of the box, as Latronica rolled around the defender and puts the ball away into the left corner of the net for the second goal of the game.

With time winding down in the first half, Kristina Strang managed to shift the momentum in favor of the Wildcats. Strang intercepted a pass, drove up the right wing and lobbed a 20-yard shot over Abington's keeper, Margaret Sheridan's (Horsham, Pa.) head as the ball landed into the left bottom corner to give SUNYIT its first and only goal of the contest.

After the break, both teams looked determined to score another goal as Abington outshot SUNYIT, 6-4 in the second period. With time winding down, SUNYIT looked to attack once more, hoping to equalize the game, but Abington's defense remained strong as the Nittany Lions kept the Wildcats at bay for the 2-1 decision and their fourth win of the year.

Abington will look to wrap up the weekend with another conference win in the books as the Blue and White hosts SUNY Cobleskill tomorrow. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Be sure to visit abingtonsports.com for all the latest news on your Penn State Abington athletic teams.
