Box Score HORSHAM, Pa.- The Penn State Abington women's soccer squad used three first-half goals to earn their first NEAC victory of the 2014 season Saturday afternoon beating Gallaudet University 3-0.
The Lions got off to a roaring start in 10
th minute courtesy of junior midfielder
Cindy Wade (Abington. Pa). Off a defender block, Wade gathered the loose ball and chipped it by Bison goalkeeper Jennifer Livengood for the 1-0 lead. It was Wade's first goal of the season.
Abington would extend their lead to 2-0 just 1:55 after the Wade goal. Freshman forward
Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) found herself one-on-one with Livengood from 40 yards out. Jones wouldn't miss the prime scoring opportunity burying the ball past the keeper for the two-goal Abington lead. That was Jones' first collegiate goal.
The Nittany Lions would put the game out of reach in the 36
th minute extending their lead to 3-0. The goal all started when freshman midfielder
Gabriela Roldan (Vienna, Va.) stole the ball from a Gallaudet defender. Roldan then fed the ball long to sophomore forward
Megan Murphy (Warminster, Pa.) who slipped the ball behind the keeper. It was Murphy's first goal of the season and Roldan's first collegiate point.
The game was called with 11:06 remaining in the second-half due to frequent lightning in the region. Both teams did wait the standard 30 minutes anytime lightning is present. Penn State Abington outshot Gallaudet 26-1 for the game with a total of 15 shots on target.
With the win, the Nittany Lions move their record to 2-1 on the season (1-0 NEAC) and will look to improve that record tomorrow when they square off with conference foe Wilson College. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Hatboro-Horsham High School. Be sure to visit abingtonsports.com for all the latest news on your Penn State Abington athletic teams.
