Rodriguez Sets Freshman Record in 67-48 Win over Summit

ABINGTON, Pa. – A spectacular night from freshman Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) aided the Penn State Abington women's basketball team to its fifth win of the season with a 67-48 victory over Summit University, Thursday night.

Abington remains undefeated at 5-0, while Summit University drops to 2-4 for the season.

Rodriguez's 28 points are the most by a freshman in the history of the women's basketball program and one point shy of cracking the single game points list.

Summit took the lead with the first bucket, but the Defenders wouldn't be able to hold on to the lead. Abington went on a 14-0 run powered by a pair of Rodriguez three-points.The Nittany Lions dominated defensively in the first quarter only allowing five points to the Defenders.

In the second quarter, the Nittany Lions and the Defenders battled back and forth but Abington held the edge, as they outscored Summit 16-13.

Senior Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.)  set the tone in the second half as she drained a shot from behind the arc in the Nittany Lions first possession.  Two buckets in the paint from junior center Madison Kimball (Jenkintown, Pa.) helped the Nittany Lions keep a 13-11 edge over the visitors in the third quarter.

With under five minutes in the fourth quarter the Defenders pulled to within 11 points, but two three-pointers from Rodriguez helped put away the Defenders.

Elum finished the game in double figures with 16 points and senior Mallory Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.)  dominated defensively with 12 rebounds and stuffed four shots for the night.

Abington will be off until the new year when they host NEAC rival Gallaudet on January 5,  at 3:00 p.m.
