Nittany Lions Sweep Tri-Match

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team earned two victories during the Dig Pink tri match to continue their prolific season. First the Nittany Lions hosted Notre Dame of Maryland and swept the Gators in a 3-0 bout, and later Abington earned a 3-1 decision over Penn State Lehigh Valley on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions celebrated their Dig Pink games to raise funds to fight breast cancer with the Side-Out Foundation.

Abington improves to 17-7 overall for the season, one game away from tying a record 18 wins in the 2012 season.

The Nittany Lions faced off against a strong Notre Dame squad, but the Nittany Lions held on to win a 25-23 decision in the first set. In the second set, the Gators tied the Nittany Lions 24-24, but Abington edged just ahead to win 26-24 to take a 2-0 lead. Again both teams battled, but the Nittany Lions earned another 26-24 win in the third set to sweep Notre Dame.

In the second game, Penn State Lehigh Valley surprised Abington with a 27-25 win in the first match. Abington came back, to win two consecutive sets by a score of 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead.  In the fourth set Abington finished off Lehigh Valley with a dominate 25-8 decision.

Senior Sam Amaro (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the attack with 30 kills between both matches, and sophomore Cori Watson (Souderton, Pa.) racked up 36 assists for the day. Freshman libero Isabel Hoch solidified the defense for the Nittany Lions with a huge 48 kills between both games.

Abington will be on the road next weekend for its final NEAC crossover event of the season. The Nittany Lions will play a crucial match against Penn College on Friday night starting at 6:00 p.m. at Lancaster Bible College.
