Nittany Lions Fall in NEAC Championship to Berks

EPHRATA, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team defeated SUNY Poly 6-5 to advance to the NEAC championship game against Penn State Berks, but couldn't come home with the title after they lost 11-7 on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions finish with their best record since 2012 as they went 23-19 in the 2016 season with a 13-3 mark in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

In game one the Nittany Lions jumped out to an early lead with an RBI single from Trey Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) and Dante Millilo (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed up with a single that drove in two runs.

Ted Smallwood (Athens, NY) added to the Nittany Lions total with an RBI single to left field to make it 4-0 in the third inning.

A three run fourth inning for the Wildcats cut into the Nittany Lions lead, and another run off a sacrifice fly tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth.

Millilo stole the lead away from the Wildcats with his single through the right side to drive in a run and give the Nittany Lions the 5-4 advantage.

Poly capitalized off a throwing error in the seventh inning to tie the game once more, but Max German (Newtown, Pa.) chipped a single through the right side to score the go ahead run.

NEAC Second Team selection Greg Mugnier (Abington, Pa.) got out of a jam in the ninth inning. With bases loaded the closer forced the batter to be called out on strikes to advance the Nittany Lions to the championship game.

Abington faced off against Penn State Berks in the NEAC Championship game, but Berks was first on the board with six runs in the third inning.

Max Perilstein (Cheltenham, Pa.) chipped away at the lead with his RBI single through the left side in the bottom half of the inning.

Berks would go on to score another three runs and hold a 9-2 lead in the sixth inning.

Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) stepped up to the plate and smashed a triple to center field to drive in two runs in the seventh inning.

Penn State Berks added two more runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.
