Second half surge pushes Nittany Lions past Gallaudet, 84-69

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team moved back into the win column with an 84-69 decision over Gallaudet on Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions 9-9 for the season and 7-6 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the team again with another double-double in a dominate performance. The sophomore guard netted 26 points and 13 rebounds for the evening.

In a high octane first quarter, Marah Hayes (Churchville, Pa.) had the hot hand with 12 of the Nittany Lions 18 points.  Gallaudet answered the Nittany Lions with six lead changes in the half, and held a two point margin at the end of the period.

Gallaudet came into the second period with momentum, but the Nittany Lions didn't let the game get out of reach. Abington clawed its way back to tie the game at 27-27 with 6:30 on the clock. The lead changed hands a few times until the final minute of the half, when Abington stole momentum with a last second shot from downtown by Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.).

The Nittany Lions opened the second half on an 11-2 run to take a commanding lead over the Bison.  With 3:07 left in the period Keyes knocked her shot from three, to push the lead to 18 points for the Nittany Lions.

In the final period, Gallaudet pulled to within eight points for the lead, but Abington put away the game with 9 of their 13 points off of free-throws.

Abington will be back in action when they host Bryn Athyn for the rematch on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
