WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Penn State Abington baseball team snapped its losing streak with two key NEAC wins in a sweep over Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon. Abington improves to 3-15 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Nittany Lions stifled the Bison in game one 6-2, and pulled out a late 8-7 winner in game two.
Junior
Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.) got his first start of the season on the mound and didn't disappoint. Mikula went a complete seven innings in game one, with only three hits against, and two strikeouts. At the plate sophomore
Tyler DiPatri (Pedricktown, NJ) led the Nittany Lions going 3-of-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored for the day.
In game one Mikula helped his case when he knocked in a sacrifice fly deep to right field to drive in the game's first run. In the third inning DiPatri added to the Nittany Lions total with an RBI single down the line, but the Bison answered an inning later with two runs to tie the game. Abington broke open the game in the fifth inning with four runs scored, highlighted by a single through the left from senior
Trey Guaglionona (Abington, PA.). Mikula closed out the game going three-up and three-down in the sixth and seventh inning to gain his first win of the season.
Sophomore
Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) kicked off the second game with single that drove in two RBI's in the second inning. Gallaudet cut the lead with a run in the top of the third inning, but Abington responded with three runs of its own. Over the next few innings the Bison would score six unanswered runs to take a 7-5 lead in the sixth. Abington tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a sac fly from DiPatri and an RBI single from
Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.). All tied in the eighth inning DiPatri broke the deadlock with a sharp single up the middle to score the game winning run.
Abington will be on the road this week when they travel to Rowan on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
