READING, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team almost pulled off a come from behind upset in the tournament but fell to Keuka College 11-10 for an early exit. The Nittany Lions won the first game 10-3 against Cazenovia to knock the Wildcats out of the tournament on
Sunday afternoon. Abington ends its season with an 18-20 record after the tournament.
Senior
Emily Wrenn (Hatboro, Pa.) got her 38
th career win in the first game against Cazenovia, to make her the all-time winningest pitcher for the Nittany Lions.
The Nittany Lions got off to a fast start in the first game with consecutive RBI singles from
Caitlin Brasier (Levittown, Pa.) and
Breanna Lineman (Philadelphia, Pa.) With bases loaded
Isabel Hoch crushed her pitch to left center field to drive in three runs. The Nittany Lions took a commanding 5-0 lead after the first inning.
Back-to Back RBI doubles from Brasier and
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) gave the Nittany Lions a comfortable 8-1 lead after four innings of action.
A two run home run for the Wildcats put them back on the board in the fifth inning, but Hoch drove in her third and fourth run of the game with a double to push the Nittany Lions ahead to the next round.
Abington advanced to face the NEAC North's top seed in Keuka College, but the Wolves were ready to go. Four singles in the first inning for Keuka College gave them the 4-0 advantage and another run in second inning pushed the lead even further.
The Nittany Lions looked to Lineman to start the rally, and with bases loaded she ripped a double down the line to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Wolves answered in the bottom of the inning off a two run home run to take back the lead.
Abington wouldn't go down without a fight and added another three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two run single from Brasier to left center field. The Nittany Lions down 7-6 after the inning.
Abington tied the game in the sixth inning, and senior
Amanda McLean (Philadelphia, Pa.) put the go ahead run across the plate in the top of the seventh.
Keuka College responded in the bottom of the seventh to stay alive in the tournament. The Nittany Lions took the upper hand in the eighth inning with two runs.
The Wolves clinched the win with three runs to knock the Nittany Lions out of the tournament.
