WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team opened conference action on the road at Penn College and came away with a 3-1 win on Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference after defeating the Wildcats.
Junior
Andia Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Nittany Lions in kills with 14, while sophomore
Cortney Schwar (Annandale, NJ) chipped in 11 service aces and 22 assists to aid the Nittany Lions. Defensively,
Cori Watson (Harleysville, Pa.) racked up 38 digs for the evening.
After a slow start to the first set Abington edged the hosts with a 25-22 win, but in the second set, a huge 6-0 run for the Wildcats helped them tie the match with a 25-23 decision. In a back-and-forth match in the third set, the Nittany Lions held a slim lead late in the game, but a huge 7-1 swing gave them a 24-17 advantage. With the set point on the line, the Wildcats rallied with three consecutive points, but Abington held on for the win. Leading 2-1 the Nittany Lions dominated the fourth set. A huge 10-0 run helped the Nittany Lions put away the Wildcats for the 3-1 win.
Next, the Nittany Lions will travel to Oneonta New York for the Hartwick College tournament. Abington will face off against Lycoming College first on Saturday, September 16 at 3:00 p.m. Later in the day the Nittany Lions will face off against Hartwick at 7:00 p.m.
