Nittany Lions Earn 3-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy

ABINGTON, Pa. – After a tough start to the season, the Penn State Abington men's soccer team rebounded with a 3-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon. Through the torrential rain, the Nittany Lions improved to 1-1 for the season.

Freshman forward Jose Palomeque (Upper Dublin, Pa.) shined for the Nittany Lions attack recording a goal and an assist in the game. Senior Andrew Costa (Philadelphia, Pa.) celebrated his birthday with his first goal of the season.

Early in the first half Costa capitalized off a block shot and placed it inside the left post to give the Nittany Lions the lead 1-0 over the Griffins. Only minutes later Palomeque earned his first collegiate goal after taking a stunning shot from the left wing and curled it under the crossbar to make the game 2-0. Defensively the Nittany Lions shut down the Griffins' only allowing three shots the entire first half.

In the second half, the Nittany Lions tallied their third goal of the game off a corner kick that found Sean Seidenburg (Rockledge Pa.) and he headed it into the net. Moments later the Griffins responded when Tyler Blair finished his shot to the top right corner to find the net and make the game 3-1 in Abington's favor. The Griffins pressed in the second half but the Nittany Lions were able to hold on to take home their first victory of the season.

Abington will be back in Action when they go on a road trip down to Virginia to face off against Roanoke College on Saturday, September 9th at 5:30 p.m.
