Women’s Basketball Stumbles against Wells, 64-53

ABINGTON, Pa. -  Down at the half, a strong second half performance from Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) helped the Nittany Lions close the gap, but the hosts fell just short to Wells in a 64-53 loss on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions drop to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in conference action.

Rodriguez led Abington with 18 points and right behind junior guard Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, PA) chipped in 17 points going 6-of-12 from the floor.  Senior center Grace Dewey (Falls Church, Va.) pulled off another double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. After today's performance Dewey averages 10 rebounds per game which places her in the top five in the NEAC.

The first quarter was hotly contested with seven lead changes. When the Express held a slim margin, the Nittany Lions would match them blow for blow, earning their points in the paint.  Going into the final minute of the quarter, the Express extended their lead, and drained a shot from downtown to shift momentum.

Abington struggled to slow the express in the second quarter as they heated up from behind the arc.  The Nittany Lions went cold from the floor and only hit five of their 19 shots throughout the period. Wells extended their margin to 38-25 before the break.

In the third period the Express held onto their double-digit advantage thanks to their hot hand on the floor. Abington outscored Wells in the third, but it wasn't enough to make a significant dent into the visitors lead.

Dewey brought the Nittany Lions within nine points in the fourth quarter by draining her layup, and earning the and-one after being fouled. Unfortunately the Nittany Lions couldn't build momentum for the win.

Abington will return to action when they travel to cross-town rival Bryn Athyn on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
