Nittany Lions Fall in Overtime Thriller to Open Season

ABINGTON, PA. -  With only a few seconds left sophomore Devin Hill (Philadelphia, PA) drained his free throw to give the Nittany Lions the lead in overtime, but Immaculata hit the last second jump shot to top Abington 80-79 in the season opener.

Three Nittany Lions hit double-doubles with senior Jordan Lomax (West Haven, CT) leading the way with 11 points and 15 boards.  Bobby Olsen (Florida, NY) earned 14 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Charles Ervin (Quakertown, PA) had a great debut with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Hill led the Nittany Lions in scoring with 16 points from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Olsen started the game hot with eight points in the first six minutes of action and leading the Nittany Lions to a 15-8 advantage.  The Mighty Macs responded by hitting the boards and earning their points in the paint t with a 12-4 run to take the lead. Abington kept the game within reach and tied the game multiple times down the stretch but couldn't get over the hump. The Mighty Macs held a slight 33-30 advantage at the break.

Their lead didn't last long in the second half when Lomax drained two straight free-throws, and Ervin took the lead with his layup.  The bucket kicked off a seesaw game where the teams traded the lead multiple times over the next few minutes, with each team responding after their shots.  A pair of threes from freshman Alex Salata III (Pottstown, PA) and Ervin gave the Nittany Lions some breathing room with a 42-37 lead.  Abington held the small margin until the final seven minutes when Immaculata tied the game 52-52, but Hill responded with his three-ball to take back the lead.  A deep three from Immaculata's Andre Allen gave the Mighty Mac's hope with 25 seconds left, brining the game within two points and a late turnover led to the tying bucket to force overtime.

The lead changed hands 10 times over the course of the five-minute overtime period but Mike Piekarski's jumper sealed the win for the Mighty Macs.

Abington will look to rebound when they travel to the Vassar Tournament to face Misericordia on Friday night at 5:00 p.m.
