ABINGTON, PA. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team hosted St. Marys College of Maryland, with the game again going down to the wire in a 89-87 overtime loss on Tuesday night. After the loss, the Nittany Lions fall to 2-2 for the season.
Â
Sophomore
Pernell Ghee (Germantown, PA) put up a career high earning a double-double with 25 points and 10 boards. Right behind senior
Jordan Lomax (West Haven, CT) recorded a double-double of his own with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Â
The Nittany Lions started out with the hot hand when they opened with a 14-3 run thanks to Lomax getting tough points in the paint. A standout performance by the Seahawks Matt Ayoub, kept St. Mary's within reach. Only down by a slim margin, the Seahawks chipped away at the Nittany Lions lead and took their first lead of the game with 9:19 on the clock. Over the next five minutes the lead changed hands five times, but a late three-ball from
Jay Fitzgerald (Philadelphia, PA) gave the Nittany Lions a 42-39 edge at the half.
Â
In the second half the Nittany Lions didn't hold on to the lead for long after getting into some early foul trouble. The Seahawks pushed their lead to eight points trying to put the Nittany Lions away, but
Devin Hill (Philadelphia, PA) shifted momentum with his shot from downtown. A pair of free-throws from Ghee put the Nittany Lions back on top 71-70. The Nittany Lions held the slim advantage up until the last 30 seconds of the game when St. Mary's tied the game 78-78 to end regulation.
Â
Abington struggled in overtime with three guys fouling out of the game, but the Nittany Lions hung in there and with 27 seconds left, Ghee tied the game with his layup. St Mary's pushed ahead with eight seconds on the clock, and held off the Nittany Lions for the win.
Â
The Nittany Lions will be back in action when they host Gallaudet for Hype Night and Staff and Faculty Appreciation Night on Wednesday November 28, at 5:30 p.m. Abington will also honor the men's soccer team by unveiling their 2018 NEAC Championship banner.
