MARCY, NY– The Penn State Abington Women's Basketball Team stellar season came to an end in the conference tournament semi-final. Coming off a big upset win Tuesday night, the Nittany Lions were unable to duplicate the same result this Saturday afternoon in a heartbreaking 58-56 loss against SUNY Poly. Both teams were tied 7 times throughout this evenly contested game.
Senior
Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, PA) led the Nittany Lions with 21 points for the game. Junior
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) notched 18 points this Saturday afternoon for the Lions.
Grace Dewey (Falls Church, Va.) had another big game on board as she grabbed 17 rebounds for the day. Â
The Nittany Lions and Wildcats were in a close battle throughout the first half. Early in the second quarter, Rodriguez landed a big three points shot to give Abington the advantage. As the game continued back and forth, Abington would take the momentum when they went on an 11-2 run towards the end of the half. During the run, Rodriguez dribbled down the court where she cut right on top of the arc and passed out to Marrero. The senior guard then took a three point shot that successfully went in. Abington led 36-28 at half-time.
At the start of the second half, Senior
Brittany Keyes made a layup that helped extended the Lions' lead. Abington's biggest lead in the game would come in the 3
rd quarter as they led as much as 11 points. Despite the team's impressive performance, the Wildcats clawed their way back. Abington held a slight lead at the end of the 3
rd quarter.
During the 4
th quarter, both teams would trade points. There were a total of 12 lead changes throughout the game. Late in the game, Freshman
Iman Richmond (Chicago, IL) made two free throws to give the Lions the lead; however SUNY Polytechnic would take the lead back with less than 30 seconds left. The Nittany Lions could not muster out anymore points where the Wildcats would come out on top.
The Nittany Lions season finished their season going 8-8 in the NEAC and 14-12 overall. This was also their third straight year making the conference tournament.
