Nittany Lions Drop Home Opener 3-2 to Widener

ABINGTON, PA – On a wet rainy day the Penn State Abington men's soccer team hosted Widener University, but fell shy in an exciting 3-2 loss on Friday afternoon.

Jose Palomeque (Upper Dublin, PA) shined for the Nittany Lions attack tallying two assists with goals from Sean Seidenburg (Rockledge PA) and Tomasz Ogonowski (Pipersville, PA).  In goal Esteban Leon had a solid outing despite conceding three goals, the freshman notched eight saves in his first collegiate start.

The Nittany Lions looked like they would be first on the board with a penalty kick in the eighth minute, but the shot passed over the crossbar.  Later in the half the Pride made the Nittany Lions pay with a long shot outside the box for the games first goal.  Only moments later Palomeque shifted momentum when his cross found Seidenburg at the back post for the easy head in. In the 23rd minute the Pride notched their second goal of the game off a rebounded shot that was placed in the net. Minutes later Widener extended their lead with a through ball down the middle that was put in past the keeper. Down 3-1, the Nittany Lions again rebounded when Palomeque streaked down the right wing and placed a perfect ball to the left post that was easily finished by Ogonowski.

After the wild opening half hour, the Nittany Lions continued to pressure the Pride with a total of nine shots in the first half.

In the second half Abington had multiple chances with a free kick that was saved well by the keeper, and a goal that was called back due to a foul.  Unfortunately the Nittany Lions couldn't find the back of the net to push the game into overtime.

Abington will be on the road tomorrow when they face off against Neumann University
