WILLIAMSPORT, PA. In the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament Championship Game the Penn State Abington men's basketball team faced off against Misericordia, but fell to the Cougars 78-67 on Saturday afternoon. After the loss the Nittany Lions drop to 5-6 for the year.
Sophomores
Jay Fitzgerald (Philadelphia, PA) and
Pernell Ghee (Germantown, PA) led the way for the Nittany Lions with 19 points each. On the boards Ghee scooped 13 rebounds to complete the double-double.
The Nittany Lions and the cougars slugged it out in the beginning of the first half with seven lead changes in the first minutes of action. Tied 11-11 Misericordia shifted momentum with a 10-2 run thanks to clutch shooting from behind the arc. Abington slowly chipped away at the lead and with eight minutes left in the half the game was tied again after Fitzgerald got to the line and knocked down both his free throws. A layup from Ghee gave the Nittany Lions a slim advantage with only four minutes in the half, but the Cougars ended the period with a 16-4 run.
A pair of tough buckets in the paint from
Jordan Lomax (West Haven, CT) cut the deficit for the Nittany Lions and a deep three from Fitzgerald brought the visitors within striking distance. The Cougars responded with a pair of three pointers as they pushed the lead to double digits. Misericordia held an 18 point advantage that the Nittany Lions couldn't overcome late in the second half.
Abington will return when the host conference rival Penn State Berks on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.
