Nittany Lions Top Grifins, 3-2

ABINGTON, PA- Continuing their home game winning streak, the Nittany Lions improve to 4-1 on the season, after an intense 3-2 victory against Gwynedd Mercy.

In set one, the Nittany Lions and Griffins were tied at 24, forcing a win by two situation. A huge kill from freshman Nakiyah Green (Philadelphia, PA) gave Abington the 25-24 advantage. Veteran Samantha Link (Southampton, PA) closed the set with a service ace. Gwynedd came back with a vengeance in set two, going on a 5 point streak against Abington in their 25-19 win.

Fighting for a second win in match three, Abington and Gwynedd found themselves again in a close 25-25 ending. Two errors by the Nittany Lions allowed the Griffins to go up 2-1 on the night. Determined to not back down, Abington went on a hot 5-0 lead late in the game. Link helped her team with a dominating 16 kills on the night, forcing the Griffins into a fifth and final set.

In the final set, Abington fed off the crowd's energy, coming out the gate with a 13-4 lead. The Griffins showed fight by scoring 7 back to back points. Again, the duo pair Cortney Schwar (Annandale, NJ) set teammate Nakiyah Green up for a scorching 14-11 kill. The Nittany Lions defeated Gwynedd Mercy in a close 15-12 decision.

Abington's top leaders tonight were Katharine Costello (New Hope, PA) who racked up 25 digs while freshman Gaby Shreve (Marshall, MI) earned 21. Joining Link's double digits in kills were Costello, McAnaney, and Green who each had 11. Senior Cortney Schwar ended the night with an impressive 42 assists. 

Up next the Nittany Lions will travel to Patchogue, New York this Saturday to face St. Joeseph's College of Long Island at 10:00am, followed by Western Connecticut State at 11:30am.
