Men's Basketball Falls To Gwynedd Mercy

ABINGTON, PA. -   The Penn State Abington men's basketball team returned from break to host Gwynedd Mercy University, but the Nittany Lions couldn't stop the Griffins in a 75-60 loss on Friday night. After the loss the Nittany Lions fall to 6-3 for the season.

Freshman guard Mark Davis led the way for the Nittany Lions scoring a career high 15 points.

The Griffins started out fast taking a 19-5 lead capitating on some early turnovers by the Nittany Lions in the first minutes of action.  Abington struggled to break away from the Griffins press defense.  The Nittany Lions shifted momentum when Jay Fitzgerald drained a three ball and Ghee took a turnover to the hoop and finished with the and-one. After the early hole the Nittany Lions kept pace with the Griffins, slightly outscoring Gwynedd 16-15, but still down 34-21 in the final five of the first half.  Ghee shifted momentum when he forced a turnover and took it in for the dunk and sparked an 8-4 run to bring the Nittany Lions within ten points.  Gwynedd Mercy pushed their lead back to double digits leading 46-33 at the break.

Both teams struggled shooting to open the half with the Griffins going 2-of-9 and the Nittany Lions only shooting 1-of-8 in the second period. A fast break dunk from Davis helped the Nittany Lions break their shooting funk.  Amir Hill drained a three to bring the Nittany Lions back within ten points but Gwynedd Mercy held off the Nittany Lions run and kept the lead to double-digits.  With six minutes left in the half the Griffins pushed their lead to 20 points holding a comfortable 70-50 advantage. The Nittany Lions weren't able to make a late run to earn their first win of 2020.

Next the Nittany Lions will get a future conference preview when they travel down to St. Mary's (MD) on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
