ABINGTON, PA- Earlier this season the Penn State Abington women's basketball team defeated Gallaudet University in an overtime thriller in Washington, DC. However, tonight the Bison came back with vengeance on Abington's turf by defeating the Nittany Lions 78-70. With this loss, Abington falls to 7-10 on the season and 5-4 in conference.
Despite the loss, junior Ashya Gaddy (Philadelphia, PA) earned her season best with a high of 22 points, while collecting 8 rebounds and forcing 4 steals. Also earning double digits in today's performance was fellow senior Sydney Barrow (Philadelphia, PA) with 17 and sophomore Lacy MacLachlin (Boyertown, PA) who contributed 11. Seniors Angie Tabares (Hackensack, NJ) and Laquana Nagbe (Philadelphia, PA) each drained eight buckets for the Nittany Lions.
Abington started the first quarter red hot by scoring twenty-two points. Senior duo Nagbe and Tabares got the Nittany Lions on the board with back to back points in the paint, before kicking the ball out to the wing to find MacLachlin who gave Abington a 10-0 run with two huge three's. The Nittany Lions took an early 22-18 lead in the first quarter.
Freshman Jyah Graham (Philadelphia, PA) kept Abington's energy alive by delivering a big three to start the second quarter. Gallaudet and Abington went blow for blow in the second quarter, before the Bison were able to snap Abington's 8-0 lead by tying the game 35-35 at halftime.
Refusing to go down without a fight, the Bison did their best shooting of the day, scoring 60% of their field goals, leading the Nittany Lions 56-46 at the end of the third quarter. Gallaudet continued to successfully shoot by taking their largest lead of the day with a 14-point advantage over the Nittany Lions with nine minutes to play in the final quarter.
Abington's defense came alive to cut the Bison's lead. MacLachlin again delivered a deep ball from behind the arc to put Abington in a 6-point reach. Successful foul shooting on the line from Gaddy, Barrow, Nagbe, and Tabares pulled Abington up to a close 70-68 trail, with one minute to play. However, Abington was unsuccessful in timely shooting, allowing the Bison to escape with the 78-70 victory.
Up next Abington will look to bounce back on the road this Wednesday when they travel to conference opponent Penn College for a 7:00pm tipoff. Â
