Softball Bows Out of NEAC Tournament

WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – In the NEAC Semifinals the Penn State softball team faced off against No. 2 seed Penn College in a battle, but ultimately fell to the Wildcats in a doubleheader.  Abington finishes the season with a 9-11 overall record.

Penn College got off to a fast start with two runs in the first inning off of RBI singles to right and left field.  The Wildcats doubled their lead an inning later, driving in another RBI single out to right field.  Abington got on the score sheet in the fourth inning when Elyssa Bohr singled out to center field to drive in Jena Gorman and Jackie McMenamin. Penn College responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to put away the Nittany Lions.

Again Penn College jumped out to an early with two runs in the first inning of game two. Abington chipped away at the lead with a ground out RBI from Bohr.  In the third inning the Nittany Lions took advantage of an error by the short stop for Kourtney Schneider to score the game tying run. Abington took their first lead of the day in the fourth inning when Laura VanHoeven singled out to center field to drive in a run and take a 3-2 lead. Penn College tied the game later on an RBI double in the fifth inning.  The Wildcats took advantage of errors from the Nittany Lions to pull ahead 5-3 in the sixth inning. In the final inning for the Nittany Lions Abington put two base runners on with nobody out.  McMenamin stole home after a wild pitch to cut the lead 5-4, with the game tying run on third base. Unfortunately the Nittany Lions couldn't get the runner past the plate and force extra innings.

Penn College will host Penn State Harrisburg in the NEAC Championship while Abington's season comes to a close.
