HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team went to Harrisburg looking for their second consecutive NEAC Championship, but the Nittany Lions fell short being swept by the hosts on Sunday afternoon. Abington finishes its season with a 20-6 record.
In game one of the doubleheader, Abington took the lead in the first inning with
Justin Fogel smacking his pitch for a RBI double out to left field. Later in the inning he was driven in by a single from Brendan Reese to give Abington a 2-0 lead. Harrisburg responded in the bottom half of the inning with a big six run inning. Both teams settled into the game and neither could get a run across the plate till the sixth inning. Â Harrisburg added a pair of solo homers to the board to give the hosts an 8-2 lead. A big four run inning for Harrisburg put them in the driver's seat, but junior
Zach Morales put in his parting shot with a two run homer over the left field wall. Harrisburg would add another run to hold on to a 13-4 win in game one.
Desperate for a win in game two, Harrisburg again scored early with four runs in the first two innings. A single from
Ryan McCarty to left field would cut the deficit, but the Nittany Lions struggled to rally till late in the game. Â Down 4-1 in the seventh inning Abington mounted a comeback.
Darrien Mogel did his job at the plate with a sacrifice fly to score the innings first run. Later freshman
Sean Doherty sent a sharp ball toward second and knocked in another run. With two on and one out
Stevie Stevenson put a bunt down to the pitcher and the Nittany Lions were tied after a perfectly executed suicide squeeze. Â Tied 4-4 in the eighth inning Abington took the lead after they took advantage of a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run hoping to force game three of the series. Â In the bottom of the ninth inning Harrisburg had momentum and loaded up the bases and took game two with a walk off double for the hosts.
The Nittany Lions will be watching the NCAA Selection Show hoping their resume can get them an at large bid into the tournament after being ranked No 1. In the Mid-Atlantic Region for the past two weeks.
