ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State women's volleyball kicked off their season opener 3-0 shutout of Cairn University in the athletic building on Wednesday night.

In the attack the Nittany Lions were led by
Jenny McAnaney picking up 21 kills for the senior. Freshman
Haley Koch put in a strong performance as the setter with 27 assists for the night, and defensively
Gaby Shreve racked up 17 digs.

In the first set Abington battled back from a slow start but ended up taking the first point in a 25-21 win. Â It was a battle in the second set with the lead changing hands 11 times. The Highlanders took a 15-10 lead, but the Nittany Lions rallied thanks to three straight kills from McAnaneny. Abington pulled ahead but Cairn hung around keeping the set within one point but the Nittany Lions took advantage of a service error to pull ahead and seal the set. Up 2-0 Abington came out of the break hot taking a 12-5 lead in the third set. The Highlanders came within two points of the Nittany Lions but nine straight points for Abington sealed the match.

Abington returns to action when they travel to Rosemont College for a trimatch starting on Saturday at noon.
