ABINGTON, PA. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season after a 1-0 shutout of Cairn University on Thursday afternoon. With the win the Nittany Lions stay undefeated for the season at 1-0-1.
Freshman defender
Madison McDowell picked up her second goal of the season and the game winner for the Nittany Lions. In goal
Mary Kate Smith held a clean sheet and stopped three shots.
In the first half the best chance for the Nittany Lions came in off a corner.
Allyson Holtz whipped the corner in over the outstretched arms of the keeper but nobody was able to connect and put it into the back of the net.
The deadlock continued into the second half until
Jamie Marino drove down the field and drew a foul right outside the box. McDowell stepped up for the free kick and placed a perfect shot into the upper left corner of the net to give the Nittany Lions the 1-0 lead in the 63
rd minute. Abington was able stave off the Highlanders attack and close out the game for their first win of the season.
Abington will be back in action when they host SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
