ABINGTON, PA – Penn State Abington senior guard
Wynter Bess scored 25 points and tied her own school record with nine steals to lead the Nittany Lions to a 76-33, triumph over visiting Wells College in a United East Conference game.
The win improved Penn State Abington to 5-9 overall, 4-2 and tied for fourth in conference play. One of the teams the Nittany Lions are tied with in the United East standings is Lancaster Bible College and the two will meet in Abington this Tuesday, January 25.
Bess missed her career-best scoring total by one as she was 9-for-18 from the field (3-for-7 from 3-point land) and 4-for-7 from the foul line. Her nine steals in 33 minutes of action tied the school mark that she set in the season-opening win over Rosemont College. Bess also had seven steals in a contest this year which is the tied for the third-highest mark.
The Nittany Lions trailed 4-3 in the opening minutes, but outscored the Express (1-13, 1-7), 10-1, for the rest of the first quarter for a 13-5 advantage. Penn State Abington turned it on in the next 10 minutes for a 31-12 lead at the break. After a back-and-forth third, the Nittany Lions put the game away with a 28-point fourth quarter.
Penn State Abington's defense forced 36 turnovers in the game and turned them into 39 points while Wells converted 22 Nittany Lions miscues into just six points. Penn State Abington also limited Wells to 20.4 percent shooting from the field.
In addition to Bess,
Angela Sanders recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds (seven on the offensive end).
Lacy MacLachlin drained four, 3-pointers and finished the day with 14 pints while
Cassie Tavormina added 11 points, seven steals, six rebounds and five assists. Those seven steals tie for the third-highest total in a single-game.
Camille Fleming had six points and 10 boards and
Kankoun Sylla notched three blocks on the defensive end.
For Wells, Carolina Barr notched 12 points and 15 rebounds wile Morgan Adams had 10 points and seven boards.
