Abington Concludes Season with United East Tri-Match

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team concluded its season on Saturday as the Nittany Lions hosted a United East Conference tri-match with Morrisville State College and St. Mary's College.  Abington dropped both its matches to the Mustangs and Seahawks by identical 3-0 scores.

How it Happened vs. Morrisville
 
* Morrisville never trailed in the opening set and built a double-digit lead at 18-8.  The Mustangs recorded 14 kills and committed zero errors in the set on 27 attempts resulting in a .519 attack percentage.  Morrisville went on to take the first set, 25-12. 
 
* In the second set Abington kept things close early on thanks to a 4-0 run that tied the set at 11-11.  Three straight service aces by Laine Kulpinski fueled the run.  However, Morrisville responded with five straight points that led to an 8-2 rally.  The Mustangs grabbed a 19-13 lead but the Nittany Lions bounced back coming within two points of the lead.  Back-to-back kills by freshmen Alyssa Flickinger and Brooke Beach followed by two straight aces from freshman Jackie Lewis made the score 22-20.  Morrisville quickly followed with two kills before taking the set, 25-21.
 
* Morrisville opened the third set with a 12-2 run on its way to a 25-12 victory in the set to secure the shutout victory.  The Mustangs tallied 15 kills in the set.
 
Inside the Box Score vs. Morrisville
 
* Beach and Flickinger each finished with six kills to lead the Nittany Lions.
 
* Lewis totaled a match-high 17 kills.
 
* Kulpinski totaled 17 assists to go along with a match-high four aces.
 
* For Morrisville, Brianna Gates finished with a match-high 21 kills.  Gates committed just one error on 22 attempts for a .909 attack percentage.  She also had 13 digs.  Hannah Taylor paced the offense with 28 assists.
 
How It Happened vs. St. Mary's
 
*   In the opening set St. Mary's overcame a 7-3 deficit by going on an 11-1 run to lead 14-8.  Abington went on to cut the lead to 18-16 after a service ace by junior Sammy Burkert.  The Seahawks responded with three straight points before Abington answered back with three straight points to once again cut the lead to two at 21-19.  St. Mary's closed the set scoring four of the final five points to take the set, 25-20.
 
* The second set turned into a back-and-forth thriller towards the tale end.  With the score tied at 17-17, the Nittany Lions grabbed three quick points to lead 20-17 and would eventually lead 24-22.  St. Mary's received a point off an Abington error and then a service ace by Nancy Slaughter tied the set at 24-24.  Both teams would exchange points leading to a 27-27 tie.  St. Mary's, after tying the set, registered two straight points to take the set, 29-27.
 
* In the third set the Seahawks led 10-4 early on before four straight points by the Nittany Lions made it a two-point set at 10-8.  However, that would be as close as Abington would get to the lead as St. Mary's would go on lead by as many as nine points at 22-13 before taking the set by double-digits at 25-15.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Flickinger finished with a match-high 10 kills, while Beach added six kills and five digs.  Junior Emma de Mey totaled five kills.
 
* Freshman Morgan Schaefer tied her season-high with a team-best 12 digs.
 
* Burkert recorded a season-high 11 digs to go along with a team-high three aces.
 
* Kulpinski led the team with 17 assists and also had seven digs.
 
* For St. Mary's, Meghan Stevens led the team with 10 kills to go along with a match-high 18 digs.  Alayna Sievert recorded a match-high 26 assists to go along with eight digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Morrisville since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-10 versus the Mustangs in the all-time series.  Against St. Mary's, Abington is now 0-2 in the newly established series that started last season.
