Second Half Surge Lifts Abington to Season Opening Victory

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to defeat visiting Gwynedd Mercy University, 58-51, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  The victory gave first year head coach Ryan Van Zelst his first career win.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 41-29 at the 15:25 mark of the second half after Gwynedd Mercy's Christian Isopi hit a jumper to extend the Griffins' lead to 12 points.  Over the next 11-plus minutes the Nittany Lions began chipping away at its opponent's lead. 
 
* Brian Randolph III hit a clutch three-pointer at the 4:37 mark to bring the Nittany Lions within one point of the lead at 48-47.  On the team's next possession, Randolph gave Abington its first lead of the game as he knocked down a jumper to make the score 49-48.  Alex Salata III capped the team's 22-7 run with a jumper at the 2:39 mark to increase the advantage to 51-48.
 
* The Griffins went on to tie the game at 51-51 off a three-pointer by Manny Clark with 1:30 to play, which turned out to be Gwynedd Mercy's final basket.  The Nittany Lions regained the lead on their next possession as Darrion Harris answered with a three of his own to make the score 54-51 with less than a minute to play.
 
* Abington preserved the victory connecting on 4-of-5 from the free throw line.  The Nittany Lions closed out the final minute of the game on a 7-0 run.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy led throughout the first half despite Abington coming within one point of the lead at 10-9 after a layup basket by Alex Podolski at the 12:46 mark.  The Griffins followed with 12-4 run to lead 22-13 midway through the opening half.  Gwynedd Mercy led 30-21 at the half.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Harris led the Nittany Lions with 19 points to go along with three rebounds.  He shot 3-of-6 from beyone the arc and was 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
 
* Randolph added 14 points (2-4 3FG) and five rebounds, while Salata also finished in double-figures with 11 points (4-8 FG).
 
* Isaac Kennon grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with seven points.
* As a team the Nittany Lions converted 10-of-13 from the free throw line and held a slight edge on the glass with a 40-36 margin.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Clark scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field.  JoHaan Vinson totaled a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the second meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy and the first since the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-1 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Nov. 11 as the Nittany Lions travel to take part in the Messiah University Tip-Off Tournament.  Abington will face host Messiah on Friday night with game time set for 7:30 p.m.
