Abington Drops United East Opener to Morrisville

Abington, Pa. –  The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped its United East Conference opener against Morrisville State College by the score of 91-54 on Friday evening at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* With the score tied 4-4 at the 7:36 mark of the opening quarter, Morrisville went on a 12-2 run over the next two-plus minutes to grab a 16-6 lead.  The Mustangs would go on to lead by as many as 12 points in the quarter after a three-pointer by Delimar Vega-Haley made the score 22-10 in the final minute.  Abington followed with a basket by senior Isabella Vazquez to cap the scoring as the Mustangs led, 22-12, after the first 10 minutes.
 
* Juniors Angela Sanders and Camille Fleming scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to bring Abington to within six points of the Mustangs at 22-16.  However, that would be as close as the Nittany Lions would get as Morrisville followed with a 9-2 run to increase its lead to double-digits at 31-18 with 5:32 to play until halftime.  The Mustangs led by as many as 18 points in the opening half after closing the second quarter with a three to take a 42-24 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* In the second half the Mustangs maintained their double-digit lead and went on to outscore the Nittany Lions, 49-30, in the final two quarters.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sanders finished with a team-high 21 points marking her second straight game with a 21-point performance.  It was also her third 20-plus point game of the season. 
 
* Vazquez also scored in double-figures as she finished the night with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from deep range.  Vazquez also converted all four of her free throw attempts. 
 
* Junior Kankoun Sylla grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
 
* For Morrisville, Cara Walker shot a near-perfect 11-of-12 from the field to finish with a game-high 28 points.  Walker also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record a double-double.  Taylor Colone-Microni totaled 14 points (5-8 FG), while Rachel Vieira added 10 points and a game-high eight assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 13th meeting between Abington and Morrisville since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-9 versus the Mustangs in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday afternoon as the Nittany Lions continue conference play with a home match up against St. Mary's College.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
