LANCASTER, PA – A late 11-0 run proved to be the difference as host Lancaster Bible College squeaked out a 61-58 victory over United East Conference foe Penn State Abington.
The win improved the Charges to 10-11 overall and 7-5 in league standings while the loss dropped the Nittany Lions to 7-12 and 6-5. The two teams and St. Mary's College are battling it out for the fourth and final playoff berth in the United East with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Lancaster Bible led by 10 at the intermission and still held an eight-point advantage late in the third quarter when Penn State Abington went on a 6-2 run thanks to layups by
Lacy MacLachlin,
Angela Sanders and
Wynter Bess. The quarter ended with the Chargers holding a slim, 42-38 advantage.
The Nittany Lions erased that deficit in the opening moments of the fourth as five straight points from Bess and a Sanders basket gave them a 45-42 lead. They were still up three, 51-48, with 4:58 left on the clock when Lancaster Bible scored 11 straight points and led by eight with 1:17 to go. Penn State Abington couldn't get closer to three the rest of the way and that was with a basket just before the buzzer.
Sanders paced the Nittany Lions with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Bess finished with 19 points and eight boards and MacLachlin added eight points in the loss. Lizzy Tilton and Alaysha Iwais combined for 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers.
Penn State Abington has five games remaining, the first a home contest with SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday, February 8 (7 p.m.).
