Anthony Bencardino hit a grand slam in the first inning and it propelled Penn State Abington to a 7-1 victory over Russell Sage on the team's Spring Break trip to Florida.
The win improved the Nittany Lions to 6-4 overall and they will wrap up their trip on Friday with a single game against Nebraska Wesleyan.
In the bottom of the first, singles by
Chase Swain and
Ryan McCarty as well as walk to
Tim Petrucelli loaded the bases for Bencardino. The freshman smashed his third home run of the season and it upped his RBI total to 12 while giving the team a 4-0 lead. They added one more in the inning
Russell Sage made it 5-1 before Penn State Abington tacked on two more in the bottom of fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Christian Reyes and a single by
Louis Rossner. The game was called after the inning due to rain.
Darrien Mogel pitched four innings and did not allow an earned run, en route to the win. He struck out three along the way. Bencardino was 1-for-2 while Rossner was 2-for-3.
Jaden Himmelreich scored two runs in the win.
