Abington Softball Splits Twinbill At Neumann

ASTON, PA -- A late-inning rally in the first game helped the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions split their doubleheader this afternoon at Neumann University. Penn State Abington took the opener, 5-3, before falling, 4-3, in the nightcap.

In the opener, Penn State Abington (3-5) trailed by one run, entering the top of the seventh. Freshman Grace Renninger singled to bring home Drew Liss and tie the game up. From there, the Nittany Lions didn't look back, with Mary Kate Smith scoring off a sacrifice fly by Maddie Duffy and a Jenna Gorman RBI single.

Penn State Abington picked up single runs in the fifth and sixth as Smith knocked the first in with an RBI single while the run in the sixth came on a Neumann error.

The Nittany Lions had four players record an RBI in their first game while Gorman, Renninger and Smith had two hits apiece. Sophomore Elyssa Bohr pitched the entire game and allowed just three runs while striking out two batters.

In their second match-up, Penn State Abington picked up right where it left off. Smith and Abbi Long hit back-to-back singles to start the game with Isabella Walters driving them both home on a single to give the Nittany Lions an early 2-0 lead.

The Knights (4-7) fired back in the fourth inning with their own pair of runs and took a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Megan Tomoney scored for Penn State Abington in the top of the sixth off a single from Liss to close the gap to just one run and the team put the tying run in scoring position in the seventh, but could not bring home the tally.

The Nittany Lions will have their home opener on Saturday, March 19 when they welcome Cairn University for a non-conference doubleheader.
