MIDDLETOWN, PA – Defending conference champion Penn State Harrisburg got a leg up in the United East standings as it took a doubleheader from visiting Penn State Abington on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep. Harrisburg won the first game, 5-3, then posted a 1-0, 11-inning triumph in the nightcap.
It was a rematch of last year's conference championship this weekend as Harrisburg improved to 6-9 and 3-0 while Abington dropped to 8-7, 0-3.
In the opener, Harrisburg scored four times on just two hits and three costly errors in the first inning. Abington cut that in half in the third as
Ryan McCarty's double scored
Sean Doherty and
Chase Swain. Harrisburg answered in its half of the third with a single tally and it stayed that way until the seventh when Abington had two on with just one out. However, Danny Eden got the remaining two outs for the save.
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel between Abington's
Jaden Himmelreich and Harrisburg's combo of Hunter Merritt and Tyler Stabley. Himmelreich went nine innings and permitted no runs and just five hits while striking out sixth. Meanwhile, Merritt went the first five-plus inning and allowed just one hit. Stabley went the rest of the way and gave up one hit as well.
The lone run came in the bottom of the 11
th when Matt Parks hit a one-out walk-off homer over the left field fence.
Penn State Abington will have its home opener on Wednesday, March 23 when York College of Pennsylvania comes to town for a non-conference battle.
