Abington Drops United East Doubleheader at Harrisburg


Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg by the scores of 9-2 and 11-5 on Saturday afternoon at Pollock Field.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Harrisburg opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with four runs off six hits to take a 4-0 lead.  Three different batters drove in runs in the inning.
 
* Abington responded in the third with two runs to cut the lead in half at 4-2.  Junior Maddie Duffy and freshman Hailey Gamble led the inning off with back-to-back doubles.  Freshman Gretchen Yanss then drew a walk to load the bases.  An error by Harrisburg led to Abington's first run and later in the inning Laura VanHoeven was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the team's second run of the inning.
 
* In the fifth inning, Harrisburg increased its lead to 7-2 with a three-run inning before adding two more runs in the sixth to cap the scoring.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Duffy went 2-for-3 with a double, while Hailey Gamble went 1-for-3 with a run and a double.
 
* For Harrisburg, Olivia Herncane went 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBI.  Steph Reider drove in two runs with a 1-for-4 performance at the plate. Carissa Yeager (10-3) earned the win with a complete game effort in which she allowed just two runs in seven innings.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, Abington opened the first with a pair of runs.  Duffy tripled to right field to score Mary Kate Smith who led the inning off with a single.  Duffy would then score on a base hit by Megan Tomoney.
 
* The lead would be short lived as Harrisburg responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  Reider drove in the first run with a single before McKenzie Boozel connected on a two-run double to make the score 3-2.
 
* Abington tied the game at 3-3 in the second inning with a run scoring hit by Duffy.  Two innings later Abington took the lead when Tomoney scored VanHoeven to make the score 4-3.
 
* However, a five-run fifth inning by Harrisburg turned the momentum in favor of the home team.  Boozel gave Harrisburg a 5-4 lead with a two-run homer.  Later in the inning Delaney Nevius also hit a two-run home run to increase the lead to 7-4.  A run scoring triple by Madelyn Krantz gave Harrisburg an 8-4 advantage after five innings.
 
* Three more runs in the sixth by Harrisburg made the score 11-4.  Krysten Moore highlighted the inning with a two-run double.
 
* Abington added a single run in the seventh with an infield hit by Abbi Long that scored Gamble who led the inning off with a walk.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Duffy recorded three hits in the game to tie a career-high.  She finished the doubleheader 5-for-7.  Duffy also drove in two runs in the game.
 
* Tomoney also drove in a pair of runs as she finished 1-for-4 at the plate.
 
* Freshman Grace Renninger went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Long finished the game 2-fo-3 with an RBI. 
 
* For Harrisburg, Boozel went 2-for-4 with two runs and a game-high four RBI.  Nevius finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 17th and 18th meetings between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 9-9 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Berks in United East action.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
