Men’s Tennis Wins Thriller Over Berks in United East Opener

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team opened United East Conference (UEC) play in dramatic fashion, with a 5-4 victory over Penn State Berks on Tuesday afternoon.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed the match 4-3 with fifth and sixth singles still in play.  At fifth singles, freshman Kyle Elliott tied the match at 4-4 after coming away with a straight set victory by the scores of 6-2, 6-3 over Berks' John Morello. 
 
* Freshman Jeevesh Gupta came from behind to win his sixth singles match up against Michael Hill after dropping the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker (7-4).  Down 6-5 in the second set, Gupta forced another set tiebreaker and won 7-3 to force a third set.  Gupta jumped out to an early lead in the 10-point super tiebreaker and won 10-4 to give Abington the 5-4 match victory.
 
*  Abington had victories at first and second singles.  Junior Adrian Condes won his first flight match against Shane Gleason in straight sets.  Condes won the first set, 7-6, after winning the tiebreak at 7-1.  He went on to win the second set, 6-2.
 
* At second singles, freshman Andrew Brown cruised to a straight sets victory by the scores of 6-0, 6-0.
 
* Abington registered a point in doubles as the duo of Brown and freshman Adam Moskal won 8-4 in the second flight.
 
News and Notes
 
* Abington is 4-1 since the start of the spring season and have won three straight matches.
 
* Brown and Moskal are now 3-0 this season as second doubles partners.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 14th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season. Abington is now 9-5 versus Berks in that span and have won two of the last three meetings.
 
Next Up
Abington will look to make it four straight wins on Saturday, April 9 as the team hosts Penn State Harrisburg in United East action.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
