Abington Sweeps Series Versus Lancaster Bible

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team closed out the season series against Lancaster Bible College by winning the final two games by the scores of 12-2 and 12-6 on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park to complete the season sweep in United East Conference (UEC) action.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington struck first as the Nittany Lions took a 1-0 lead after Chase Swain scored on a passed ball.  Swain reached base after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
 
* Lancaster Bible responded in the second with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.  Kaden Hunt drove in a pair of runs on a two-out single.
 
* The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Chargers until the fourth inning when the Nittany Lions regained the lead.  Tim Petrucelli led the inning off with a walk and then Zach Morales connected on a two-run homer to right field to make the score 3-2.
 
* Abington added to its lead in the fifth with another two-run home run; this time off the bat of Justin Fogel.  Prior to Fogel's first home run of the season, Swain delivered a double to right-center field.
 
* The Nittany Lions blew the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth by score seven runs on five hits.  Matt Crisci and Swain each had back-to-back two run hits in the inning to make the score 9-2.  A three-run home run by Petrucelli later in the inning capped the scoring for Abington.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Bill Trimble (3-2) picked up his third win of the season after 5.1 innings of work.  He held the Chargers to just two runs on five hits while striking out three batters.  Ryan McCarty (S, 1) picked up his first save of the season after retiring the final two batters in the sixth inning with the tying run at the plate.  McCarty then pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game.
 
* Abington had four batters record multiple hits in the game.  Swain finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.  Fogel went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Petrucelli went 2-for-2 with two runs, three RBI and two walks.  Sean Doherty also had a pair of hits as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Hunt went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Jaden Pinkney finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two the Nittany Lions set the tone early by scoring five runs on five hits in the opening inning.  McCarty drove in the game's first run with a double to right field.  After a Petrucelli walk, Morales and Doherty each drove in runs with back-to-back sacrifice flies.  Anthony Bencardino followed with a shot down the right field line for a two-run homer to make the score 5-0.
 
* McCarty made the score 6-0 after leading off the second inning with a solo home run.  After the Chargers scored their first run of the game in the third, Abington responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning; all coming off home runs.  With one out, Swain connected on a solo home run to center field.  Two batters later, McCarty launched his second home run of the game; another solo shot to make the score 8-1.  After a Petrucelli single, Morales joined the home run party with a two-run shot to center field to increase the Abington lead to 10-1.
 
* Abington scored again in the sixth and in the seventh.  Swain drove in the run in the sixth and Morales went deep to lead off the seventh for his second home run of the game. 
 
* The Chargers scored four runs in the ninth with Blake Greenly and Pinkney each recording an RBI in the inning. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* McCarty's two home runs now gives him 16 on the year which still ranks tops in Division III.  McCarty finished the game 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI and two walks.
 
* The two home runs by Morales, who finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBI, marked his first multi home run game of his career.
 
* Gregg Sywulak (2-0) earned the win as he went five strong innings allowing just one earned run off two hits.  He finished the game with four strikeouts. 
 
* Andrew Lastowka finished 5-for-3 with a run scored, while Louis Rossner went 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
* For the Chargers, Greenly went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI.  Mark Cullins also had a pair of hits as he went 2-for-2 with a run after entering the game in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Good-Bye Home Run!
As a team, Abington finished the three-game series with 14 home runs marking a season-high for home runs in conference series action.  The six homers in the final game of the series tied a season-high for the team. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 17th and 18th meetings between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011 season. The Nittany Lions are now 12-6 versus the Chargers in that span.  Abington has won six straight games in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 12 as the Nittany Lions travel to face nationally ranked Rowan University in non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
