Abington Falls to Harrisburg in United East Championship

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team's run for a United East Conference (UEC) championship game to an end as the Nittany Lions fell to Penn State Harrisburg in the championship round on Wednesday afternoon.  Harrisburg forced a winner-take-all match up after winning an elimination game, 23-6.  Harrisburg, the top seed and host in the tournament, then came away with a 10-7 victory to win the United East title.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Harrisburg scored three runs in the first inning, including two off a double by Maddux Ryan before breaking the game open in the third with an 11-run inning.  Harrisburg hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the inning with Matt Parks hitting a grand slam.
 
* In the bottom of the third, Abington got four of the runs back.  Junior Josh Baar drove in the first two runs with a double to left-center field.  Sophomore Justin Fogel followed with a double of his own to score Baar.  Fogel would later score on a sacrifice fly by senior Ryan McCarty.
 
* Harrisburg held Abington to single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Baar drove in three of Abington's six runs after going 1-for-3 in the game.  His third RBI came in the eighth inning off a sacrifice fly.
 
* Fogel finished the game with a team-high three hits in four at-bats.  He scored one run and drove in another.
 
* Sophomore Andrew Lastowka went 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks.
 
* For Harrisburg, Ryan went 4-for-6 with three runs and four RBI. Parks finished 2-for-3 with three runs, four RBI and three walks.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Harrisburg once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Kevin Lehner connected on a three-run homer in the bottom of the first.  Harrisburg scored three more runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to lead 9-0 at the end of four.
 
* Abington responded in a big way in the fifth cutting the deficit to 9-5 with a five-run inning.  Senior Jaden Himmelreich got the offense going with a two-run homer; his first of his career.  After back-to-back singles by junior Sean Doherty and Fogel, McCarty hit a base knock to right field to score Doherty. Sophomore Tim Petrucelli scored Fogel with a sacrifice fly before McCarty came in to score off a single by senior Zach Morales.
 
* Harrisburg tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth off a base hit from Lehner to increase the lead to 10-5. 
 
* Abington made things interesting in the top half of the ninth when freshman Chase Swain led the inning off with a solo home run.  Abington added another run later in the inning to make the score 10-7.  With two outs and the tying run at the plate, Harrisburg managed to record the final out to secure the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* McCarty finished the game 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  His fifth inning run marked his 89th of the season which tied the Division III single season record. He also recorded his 100th hit of the season in fifth inning as well.
 
* Fogel went 2-for-4 as he finished the afternoon with five hits in five at-bats. 
 
* Morales also had multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
 
* Himmelreich led the team with two RBI coming off his first collegiate home run in the fifth inning.
 
* For Harrisburg, Lehner recorded a game-high five RBI after going 3-for-5 at the plate.  He also scored two runs.  Parks finished 3-for-4 with three runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 16th and 17th meetings between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 8-9 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions were appearing in their 10th United East (formerly the NEAC) Tournament and sixth straight with the exception of 2020 when the tournament was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Abington is now 14-18 in the postseason with championship game appearances in 2019, 2021 and 2022.  The team won the title in 2019.
